High school students to exhibit in Haas Gallery

Works by 20 high school students will be exhibited in Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s Haas Gallery from May 14 to 31. The artwork was selected based on a review of art portfolios by faculty from BU’s art and art history department.

Three of the student artists will be offered tuition scholarship awards during a reception and awards ceremony from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, in the gallery. Awards will be announced at 7 p.m. 

Names and high schools of students whose works have been selected for exhibition are: Laura Chappell, Millville; Brandon Conrad, Breanna Fowler, Ava Guffey, Kagen Haberstick, McKayla Robbins, Scarlett Tuck and Lakota Wadena, all of Bloomsburg; Gunnar Feldmann, Morgan Gallagher, Abby Meredick, Justin Phillips and Taylor Roberson, all of Danville; Sarah Foster, Central Columbia; Olivia Greene, Southern Columbia; Darrian Keller and Logyn Smith, both of Selinsgrove; Merre Martin, Northwest Area; Cassandra Vanatta, Warrior Run; and Tailor Weible, Garnet Valley.

The exhibit will also be featured at The Antler, the Moose Exchange annex at 24 E. Main Street, during July and August, with a closing reception on Friday, Aug. 22, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The portfolio review and tuition scholarship program is possible thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor who was inspired by First Columbia Bank’s Teen Star Competition.

“The donor is impressed by the talented high school vocalists and musicians who perform in the annual Teen Star Competition,” said James Brown, dean of the College of Liberal Arts. “The concept behind these scholarships is to recognize talented young people who excel in the visual arts.”

BU seniors to show work

Nineteen BU art and art history majors will show their artwork in the Spring Senior Exit Show in the Haas Gallery of Art from Tuesday, April 29, through Saturday, May 10.

The show will open with a reception on Tuesday, April 29, from 10:30 a.m. to 6 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., where the seniors will talk briefly about their work. This event is open free to the public.

Haas Gallery of Art is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Saturdays from noon to 2 p.m.

Documentary on Art Installation to air Tuesday

A documentary detailing the creation of the large collaborative art installation in Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s Haas Center for the Arts will premiere at BU. “Confluence: The Making of an Installation Art Piece” will be shown on Tuesday, April 29 at 7 p.m. in the Haas Center’s Mitrani Hall.

'Confluence' exhibit to be unveiled in Haas Saturday

The public unveiling of “Confluence,” a 7-by-62-foot mixed media collaborative installation by 19 regional artists, will be Saturday, May 11, at 6:30 p.m. in the grand lobby of BU's Haas Center for the Arts.

This original piece celebrates the collaboration of the university with the greater Bloomsburg community and depicts the growth and activity of a thriving town in the Susquehanna River Valley. Nineteen members of Susquehanna River Artists created 18 individual tiles that collectively depict the wealth of visual art in our region.

Artists who contributed to the piece are: Dave Ashby, Sara Baker, Annie Barnhardt, Susan Fulginiti, Doug Hopkins, Jeff McGreevy, Larry Ney, Dave Stabley and Deb Stabley, all of Bloomsburg; William Whitmoyer and Marcia and Richard Lilley, all of Millville; Robert Brown and Glen Klein, both of Danville; Pamela McHenry Thomas, Cambra; Abigail Smith Kurecian and Joan McCarty, both of Orangeville; Sarah Mika, Catawissa; and Sandy Tranor, Benton.

The completion and unveiling of the project, initiated by Bloomsburg University’s Celebrity Artist Series and the Columbia-Montour Visitors Bureau, coincides with the staged presentation of “The Temptation of the Muses,” a performance of dance and music that also celebrates water.

The performance by the Ahn Trio with the Nai-Ni Chen contemporary dance ensemble, begins Saturday, May 11, at 8 p.m. in Mitrani Hall. Chen and the Ahns will present a workshop for area dancers Friday, May 10, at 4:30 p.m. in Carver Hall, Kenneth S. Gross Auditorium.

Final show for BU seniors

BU's graduating art studio and art history students’ exit show will open with a reception Wednesday, May 8, from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in Haas Gallery of Art. The exhibit will continue until Saturday, May 18, and will be open to the public free of charge Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 2 p.m.

The exhibit features a variety of materials and mediums, including sculpture, photography, drawing, painting, installation, fabric design, mixed media and printmaking.

The opening reception will begin with presentations by art history seniors Holli Trivelpiece, Berwick; Disa Turner, Danville; Mei Yang and Shonda Cobb, both from Bloomsburg; Deanna Barnes, Royersford; Angie Musselman, Millville; and Jill A. Suda, Swoyersville. Topics include “Female Portraits of the Renaissance,” “Into the World of Hancock” and “Cake: Delectable Art.”

Art studio seniors who will discuss their works beginning at 12:45 p.m. are Rachel Barnes, Butler; Katelin Bolig, Winfield; Julie Farnan, Pen Argyl; Terrance Jones, Hampton, Ga.; Alyssa Karpa, Doylestown; Kristen Lang, Paramus, N.J.; Tyann McGinn, Shamokin; Erin Mills, West Chester; Chello Sherman, Bloomsburg; Kimberly Walko, Hazleton; Nevada Dehn, Mifflinville; Daniel Gaylord, Vestal, N.Y.; A.J. Diaz, Montoursville; Carissa Meyer, Muncy Valley; and Suda. They will talk about how they arrived at their body of work, materials used, themes and aspects that are crucial to their studio practice and art-making process.

Students exhibiting in Haas

BU students are exhibiting their work in the Haas Gallery through Tuesday, April 9. Approximately two dozen students are exhibiting about 40 pieces in a variety of media. An artists' reception will be held Friday, March 29, from 7 to 9 pm.

Upcoming shows at Haas Gallery include:

• An exhibit of works by Toshiko Takaezu from April 17 to May 1. The show of works by the late, internationally-renowned  ceramicist is being organized by the museum exhibition class. Takaezu was a close personal friend of BU professor emeritus Karl Beamer and she contributed many works to the university.
• The BU senior exit show will open May 8 and run to May 18.

A new spin on wallpaper?

Installation Artist Carlie Trosclair is exhibiting her work in Bloomsburg University's Haas Gallery of Art through March 15. There will be an opening reception Thursday, Feb. 21, from 11 am – 2 pm with artist talks at 11:15 am and 1:15 pm. The gallery is open Monday through Friday 9 am to 4 pm and Saturdays noon to 2 pm. Trosclair is known for working with fabric and wallpaper when creating her spaces.

Miscellanea: Beginnings, closings, readings and taxes

Bloomsburg University’s annual Chinese New Year Party, sponsored by the BU Chinese Student Association and Chinese Faculty, will begin at noon Saturday, Feb. 9, in Kehr Union Ballroom. The potluck dinner will be served at 1 p.m., followed by music and dance programs. Photo realism ...?

Tomiko Jones is exhibiting at Haas Gallery of Art through Feb. 11. The exhibit is open to the public free of charge Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. A reception will be Monday, Feb. 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the gallery.

 Jones’ work consists of sculptural video installations and “questionably fictional photographs.” Her videos are essentially moving photographs, showing an authentic scene with innovative angles and perpetual movement.

Jones received a Master of Fine Arts in photography with a certificate in museum studies from the University of Arizona in Tucson in 2008. She has received various awards, including the national Society for Photographic Education Freestyle Crystal Apple Award for Outstanding Achievement. She teaches 3D Concepts at Drury University in Springfield, Mo., as part of a summer intensive Master of Arts Program

There will be a closing reception with artist Sky Kim on Tuesday, Nov. 27, from 11 am to 2 pm in Bloomsburg University's Haas Gallery of Art. Kim will give talks at 11:15 am and 1:15 pm.

Graduating Bloomsburg University art studio majors are showing their work for one more week until May 12.  Featured in the exhibit are works by these BU students: Brittney Logan Andrew Bull Rachel Etzweiler Megan Combs Melanie Ortiz Olivia DeFranco Megan Koontz Lena Kurtz and Kyle Gosson. A detail of Gosson's sculpture, which deals with his experience as a deaf person, is pictured. This piece is located just outside of Haas Gallery and really needs to be seen in person to be fully appreciated. The Haas Gallery is open free of charge weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

To the Bat ... gallery

The Bloomsburg University Museum Exhibition class has put up a show in the Haas Gallery ... "The Many Faces of Batman." The show runs through May 10. A reception is today (April 24) from 4 to 5:30 p.m.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. and closed Sunday.

Print me a picture

Bloomsburg University's Haas Gallery of Art will exhibit works by Erik Waterkotte from Friday, Feb. 17, to Monday, March 19.

Waterkotte, a print maker and painter, aims to explore popular culture, myth and fantasy. A reception will be held on Wednesday, March 7, from noon until 2 p.m., including an artist lecture at 1:15 p.m. by Waterkotte.

The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturdays from noon until 2 p.m. The gallery is closed on Sundays and university holidays.

Is that an umbrella in your hand ...

Artist Michael Donovan will be in the Haas Gallery of Art this weekend assembling his sculptures. His exhibit, "Sustainable," will be on view Jan. 17 through Feb. 10. There will be a reception for Donovan on Thursday, Feb. 2 from noon to 2 p.m. and he will give a talk at 1:15 p.m.

The annual Student Art Show is up through Wednesday, April 20. Best of show went to Nemi Moyer and honorable mentions to Jessica Chappell, Megan Combs and Keith Seaman. (My personal fav was the diner check - EGF.)

The senior exit show runs Tuesday, April 26, through Saturday, May 7. Featured artists will include: Kyle Ale, Jessica Chappell, Dominique Filiziani, Mary Griffin, Kristin Hein, Courtney Martin, Nemi Moyer, Devon Oberkircher, Lauren Robinson, Kristin Stephens, Hilary Trainer, Ashley Willis and Annamarie Wojton.

Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and noon to 2 p.m. Saturdays. Admission is free.
