Illustration exhibit in Benton Saturday

Artist, illustrator and cartoonist Ron Wing will host his annual exhibition at The West Creek Gallery in the historic Cole's Mill in Benton on Saturday, Sept. 14, from 5 to 9 pm. (Benton is about half an hour's drive from Bloomsburg.)

Guest artists will include Cheryl Fallon, Jody Fallon and Mary Ellen Minnier. The show is one night only.

Wing's work will be familiar to many people with children as he illustrated many Choose you Own Adventure books. He was  born in 1929 in San Diego, studied fine art for several years before serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After three years in the Navy, he returned to Pratt Institute and graduated in 1954. He lived and worked in New York City for most of the 50’s, where he earned his living as a cartoonist and illustrator. During this time he continued to paint and periodically sell his fine art. He left NYC for Red Bank, New Jersey and then moved to Columbia County, Pennsylvania in the early 60’s. As a commercial artist and cartoonist for over 50 years, Ron Wing’s work has been published in such magazines as Business Week, Argosy, Pageant, Coronet, Reader’s Digest and The Saturday Evening Post. For the last 45 years, Ron has lived in the historic Cole’s Mill in Benton.

Students exhibiting in Haas

BU students are exhibiting their work in the Haas Gallery through Tuesday, April 9. Approximately two dozen students are exhibiting about 40 pieces in a variety of media. An artists' reception will be held Friday, March 29, from 7 to 9 pm.

Upcoming shows at Haas Gallery include:

• An exhibit of works by Toshiko Takaezu from April 17 to May 1. The show of works by the late, internationally-renowned  ceramicist is being organized by the museum exhibition class. Takaezu was a close personal friend of BU professor emeritus Karl Beamer and she contributed many works to the university.
• The BU senior exit show will open May 8 and run to May 18.

A view of Africa

BU students are showing photographs taken during their study abroad experience in Ethiopia and Cameroon this January at the Haas Gallery of Art. There will be a reception and readings by the students Wednesday, March 13, from 11 am to 1 pm.

This exhibit presents a selection of photographs made for the course, "Photography in the Field: Working in a non-Western Culture," introduced students to challenges of making photographs of unfamiliar people and places with both respect and sensitivity. Photo realism ...?

Tomiko Jones is exhibiting at Haas Gallery of Art through Feb. 11. The exhibit is open to the public free of charge Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 2 p.m. A reception will be Monday, Feb. 11, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the gallery.

 Jones’ work consists of sculptural video installations and “questionably fictional photographs.” Her videos are essentially moving photographs, showing an authentic scene with innovative angles and perpetual movement.

Jones received a Master of Fine Arts in photography with a certificate in museum studies from the University of Arizona in Tucson in 2008. She has received various awards, including the national Society for Photographic Education Freestyle Crystal Apple Award for Outstanding Achievement. She teaches 3D Concepts at Drury University in Springfield, Mo., as part of a summer intensive Master of Arts Program

Miscellanea: Poetry, exhibits, lectures, concerts

Poet Grant Clauser, a Bloomsburg University alumnus, will read Monday, April 9, at 7:30 pm from his new poetry collection, The Trouble with Rivers, in the Alumni House, Bloomsburg University.

Bloomsburg University’s Percussion Ensemble will perform Tuesday, April 10, at 7:30 pm in Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall. The performance is open to the public free of charge.

The annual Take Back the Night observance will be held Tuesday, April 10, from 7 to 8 pm, beginning at Bloomsburg University’s Kehr Union, Ballroom.

David Gluck, author of “Rhythms of the Game,” will give a multimedia presentation Wednesday, April 11, at 6 pm in Bloomsburg University’s Haas Center for the Arts, room 116. Gluck’s presentation, which includes video and music, shares the story of Bernie Williams, former New York Yankees star and accomplish jazz guitarist. He will explain how athletes and artists conquer their fears, embrace failure and ultimately achieve extraordinary success.

R. Holborn Brown will have a show of photographs, “Passages,” at the Artspace Gallery, Center Street, Bloomsburg, from April 12 to May 20. Reception will be Saturday, April 14, from 6 to 8 pm.

The 2012 Juried Student Art Show will run in Bloomsburg University's Haas Gallery through April 23. A reception will be held Friday, April 20, from 5 to 7 pm. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday from 9 am to 4 pm and Saturday from noon to 2 pm.

Susan Feiner, professor of economics and professor of women and gender studies at the University of Southern Maine, will speak on “The New/Old Macho Economy” Friday, April 13, at 1 pm in Bloomsburg University’s McCormick Center, room 1303. The lecture is sponsored by BU’s Department of Economics and College of Liberal Arts.
