BU Players to stage 'The Children's Hour'

The BU Players will present The Children’s Hour By Lillian Hellman from April 11 to 15 at the Alvina Krause Theatre, Center Street, Bloomsburg. David A. Miller directs.
Showtimes are Friday and Saturday at 7:30 pm, Sunday at 3 pm, Monday and Tuesday at 7:30 pm.

About the play: It is 1934. Two women successfully run a school for girls. One of their students is determined to do as she pleases, even if it means creating a corrosive lie that undoes the women’s lives. Sample the arts Saturday

Taste of the Arts, an afternoon of art and entertainment, will be held on Saturday, March 8, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Caldwell Consistory in downtown Bloomsburg. The event, sponsored by Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s College of Liberal Arts and Center for Visual and Performing Arts, is free and open to the public.

Students and faculty in theater, music, dance, art and art history, and English will showcase their talents throughout the afternoon with performances taking place about every 10 minutes. A Taste of the Arts will feature music by the Jazz, Percussion and Guitar ensembles, Concert Choir, Sax Quartet, Women’s Chorale and Husky Singers; theatrical and dance performances; and poetry readings, along with fine arts exhibitions, demonstrations and talks.

Visitors may attend any portion of the three-hour program. Refreshments will be available.

Miscellanea: See the movie, meet the writer ...

Being Flynn, a film based on writer Nick Flynn's memoir, "Another Bullshit Night in Suck City,” will be shown Monday, Feb. 17, at 7:30 pm in BU’s McCormick Center, room 2303. The event is free and open to public. Flynn will visit campus on Wednesday, March 5, as part of the Big Dog Reading Series. The film stars Robert DeNiro, Paul Dano and Julianne Moore. The screening is open to the public free of charge, sponsored by BU’s English department.

Sue O’Donnell, associate professor of digital art at BU, will explore the tangible nature of memory in her lecture, “Collective Memory,” on Wednesday, Feb. 19, at 4:30 p.m. in the Warren Student Services Center, room 004. The lecture is based on O’Donnell’s book, “Collective Memory: Recollections from 203 West Main Street Bloomsburg, PA: a Workbook,” published in 2012. The book centers on the Moose Exchange, a well-known community center in downtown Bloomsburg that received heavy damage from a fire on Jan. 30. When O’Donnell rented studio space in the Moose Exchange, she heard people reminiscing over their times in the building for proms, weddings and holiday parties. O’Donnell collaborated with various community members to get those memories published.

The Sundance Film Festival award-winning documentary Inequality for All Thursday, Feb. 20, from 5 to 6:30 pm in the McCormick Center for the Humanities, room 1303. A panel of university faculty will discuss the problems of economic inequality at 4 p.m. in McCormick Center, room 1316. The event is free and open to the public.

BU Players plan '30 plays in 60 minutes' festival

The Bloomsburg University Players will perform plays from “Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind” in their February Festival: 30 Plays in 60 Minutes. The show runs from Thursday to Saturday, Feb. 13 to Feb. 15, and continues on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 19 and. 20.

All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Alvina Krause Theater, 226 Center St., in downtown Bloomsburg. Tickets are free to BU students, $6 for adults and $4 for seniors and students from other schools.

“Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind” was originally produced by the Chicago-based experimental theater troupe, the Neo-Futurists, whose production has been running for more than 20 years. Neo-Futurism is inspired by the Italian Futurist movement from the early 20th century, which is based on the concepts of honesty, speed and brevity.

During the production, the audience calls out the number of the performance they would like to see next, creating an unpredictable and exciting atmosphere. The BU Players’ production is directed by professional guest artist Kevin R. Free, a long-time New York Neo-Futurist.

Bloomsburg University students will give a staged reading of two new plays Thursday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 pm at the Moose Exchange, 203 West Main St.

The Graduate comes to Haas Center

The play is called "The Graduate" ... though in my mind I always think Mrs. Robinson after the Simon and Garfunkel song. This Friday, Nov. 15, L.A. Theatre Works brings cult favorite “The Graduate” to life at 8 p.m. at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall.

Tickets for the Celebrity Artist Series show are $35 for general admission and $17 for BU students and children.

Reviewer Caroline Sposto of Broadway World praises the new production for “the skillful use of an innovative genre bolstered by deft direction, peerless performances and spellbinding sound design. “Their reprisal of this classic is a fascinating hybrid — radio production meets stage production — that unfailingly delivers the best of both. The actors appear in costume and are physically suited to their roles, but they perform with minimal staging. Live manual sound effects replace props and there are no sets per se. As a result, vocal nuances, full-on facial expressions and solid literary writing carry the fast-paced performance.”

 From novel to big screen, the film received multiple Academy Award nominations and remains one of the top-grossing films. L.A. Theatre Works, known for the spontaneity of its live performances, takes “The Graduate” to stage embodying character favorites Mrs. Robinson, Benjamin, Elaine and other. Based on Charles Webb’s novel, this production coincides with the 50th anniversary of its publication. 

Come on down to 'Avenue Q'

The Bloomsburg University Players will present the comedic musical Avenue Q at 7:30 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 7, 8 and 9, and 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 10, at the Alvina Krause Theater, 226 Center St., Bloomsburg.

Staged with large puppets (a la Sesame Street), Avenue Q is a laugh-out-loud, Tony Award-winning musical about a group of 20-somethings seeking their purpose in life in the big city. Avenue Q is the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. There, he meets Kate (the girl next door), Rod (the Republican), Trekkie (the internet sexpert), Lucy the Slut (need we say more), and other colorful types who help Princeton finally discover his purpose in life.

Arts in Autumn dinner at Moose Oct. 20

Musical performances by a jazz combo, poetry readings and scenes from “Avenue Q” will be featured during the second annual Arts in Autumn. Presented by Bloomsburg University's Center for Visual and Performing Arts, the dinner celebration will be Sunday, Oct. 20, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Moose Exchange, 203 W. Main Street. Tickets at $35 per person benefit BU scholarships and must be ordered in advance.

Guests can preview the items available in the silent auction beginning at 5 p.m., including pieces by local artists and tickets for Celebrity Artist Series shows and BU theatre department performances. Guests may also view an exhibit which spotlights works in a variety of mediums by advanced art students.

The three-course dinner will be interspersed with musical performances, poetry readings by BU students from Creative Writing: Poetry classes and members of BU Players performing a scene and a song from the upcoming production of “Avenue Q,” which will run from Nov. 7 to 10.

A fun take on the expression: "Keep your pants on"

The Bloomsburg University Players will present comedian Steve Martin’s adaptation of Carl Sternheim’s play The Underpants from Wednesday, April 17, to Saturday, April 20, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, April 21, at 3 p.m. at the Alvina Krause Theater, 226 Center St., Bloomsburg.

Admission is free with BU ID, $6 for adults and $4 for students and seniors. Directed by David A. Miller, assistant professor of theatre, The Underpants tells the tale of Theobald Maske and his unusual problem: his wife’s underpants won’t stay on. One Friday morning, they fall to her ankles right in the middle of town. Mortified, Theo swears to keep her at home until she can find some less unruly undies. Amid this chaos, he's trying to rent a room in their flat, and the prospective lodgers have some surprises of their own.

 Miller said Martin’s comic genius and sophisticated literary style have transformed the 1910 German social satire written by Sternheim into a comedy about gender politics.

Flood Stories, Too

The Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble and the Bloomsburg University Players are staging Flood Stories, Too from March 7 to 17. Shows are pay what you wish.

Written and directed by Gerald Stropnicky, Emeritus member of Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble, Flood Stories, Too. is a collection of personal narratives and stories of local residents’ experiences with the flood, artfully crafted into a two-act play. 

“You’ll see through different monologues that almost all of the actual events are taken from stories that people have given us,” said Phil Czekner, Bloomsburg University student and actor in the production. 

Many stories were gathered by Mary Reinsburrow, another Bloomsburg University student and actress in the production. Characters featured in the multitude of stories range from unconcerned students to victims themselves to volunteers, even including Mayor Dan Knorr and Bloomsburg University’s President, Dr. David Soltz.

In addition to the play, there are a series of events related to the events scheduled in the town and university as well.

The National Broadway Tour of Monty Python’s “Spamalot” will appear Friday, Feb. 8 at 8 p.m. at Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania’s Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall.

Tickets for the Celebrity Artist Series presentation cost $34.50 for adults, $19.50 for children and $17 for BU students. Based on the work of Eric Idle, Mike Nichols and John Du Prez, the theater production won a Tony Award for Best Musical in 2005. With a plot ripped from the film “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table encounter dozens of bizarre obstacles, including the taunting Frenchmen and an over-zealous dead body removal service.

Between the outrageous antics and absurd-yet-catchy songs, the Sunday Times says the show “[raised] silliness to an art form.”

The Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble is staging As You Like It with an on-stage indie-rock band featuring local teen musicians who dig Shakespeare.

Cinema: Prepare to see a cold, white scary place

The horror film, The Last Winter, written and directed by Larry Fessenden, CEO of Glass Eye Pix, will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, in Bloomsburg University’s Warren Student Services Center, room 004.

The 1993 French film, Blue, will be shown Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7 pm in Bloomsburg University’s McCormick Center, room 2303, as part of the Gender Studies Minor Foreign Film Series. The first of a trilogy of films dealing with contemporary French society, Blue centers on how the wife of a composer deals with the death of her husband and child. The series is sponsored by BU’s Gender Studies Minor, Department of English and College of Liberal Arts. Admission is free.

The Bloomsburg University – Community Orchestra will present its fall concert Sunday, Nov. 11, at 2:3o pm in Haas Center for the Arts, Mitrani Hall. The program will feature Festive Overture by Shostakovich; Pavane Pour Une Infante Defunte by Ravel; The Moldau by Smetana; and Fantasia Para Un Gentilhombre by Rodrigo. Admission is free. 

BTE staging 'Moon Over Buffalo'

The Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble brings The Moon over Buffalo to the stage Oct 4 through 21. If you come opening night Thursday, Oct. 4, you can pay what you want.

BTE member Andrew Hubatsek directs the comic farce by Ken Ludwig. It's 1953 and George and Charlotte Hay, one-time Hollywood hopefuls, have been touring for over 20 years and not getting anywhere but tired. Doors slam, identities are mistaken and lovers ... go to the show and find out?

Love is Hard

The Bloomsburg University Players open their fall season with Jack and Jill by Jane Martin.

Performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Aug. 30 and 31, and Friday and Saturday, Sept. 7 and 8, as well as 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 9, in the Theatre Lab, located behind the University Store. Tickets are $6 for adults, $4 for seniors and non-BU students and free for BU students with a student ID.


 “Many plays explore the search for the perfect mate, Jack and Jill looks at what happens after that person is found,” said Bruce Candlish, associate professor of music, theatre and dance. “It playfully portrays the hard work of love.”

Senior Lauren Shover from Camp Hill directs and designed the set and sound; junior Sydney Hare, Sunbury, and sophomore Emily Miller, Mercer, designed costumes and junior Rebecca Kestel, Abington, designed lights.

The cast features senior Ben Deivert, Northumberland; junior Rachel DelVecchio, Bethlehem; senior Gabriella Russo, Effort; senior Philip Czekner, Harleysville; junior Jaryn Wilcox, Canton; and junior Dan Clark, Abington. Junior Courtney Costello, Pittston Township, is the stage manager.

BU Players previously staged Martin’s Anton in Show Business and this latest production features some of the same offbeat humor says Candlish.

Tickets for Jack and Jill are available at the Performing Arts Box Office in the lobby of the Haas Center for the Arts or at the door before each performance.

Noh theatre by torchlight

The Bloomsburg Theatre ensemble will perform the Noh play Atsumori on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 3 and 4, at 7 pm by torchlight at Bloomsburg Town Park. The performance is free. Bring your own lawn chair. (In case of rain, the performance will take place at BTE's Alvina Krause Theatre).
